The pattern for this activity
is at the below url. There is one thing that I've added
to this project. You can look at the project on the webpage and
then read on to see what I've added to it. There is only one activity, but
two different patterns, which the children can pick which they would
like to do, or they can do them both. :0)
I have one other pattern for a lions face, and this is the one that we
will be doing at Sukkot. The instructions are at the bottom of
this page.
Take a piece of cardboard about
7 inches long, by about 4 inches wide. Take brown, or tan, or one
string of both and wrap them around the square cardboard about 50
times. Next, leave about 12" of string to use to tie the roll of
yarn together at one end. Tie this really tight and in several
knots so it won't come out. Don't cut the extra string yet. Next, cut the other end.
So now you have cut yarn on both sides of a knot. Smooth
out the yarn so it all lays pretty good. When you are finished with the
lion on the webpage, it is time to afix the mane
on. Make a small enough hole in the middle of the tp holder with
a pair of sissors, or a pen. Now you can thread your longest
yarn on the mane (that you used to tie the knots) through the middle of
the tp holder, and out through the back. Now, bring the string up
towards the knots that are holding all the strings together, and tie
the 12" string at the top of the tp holder near the other knots. You can now push all the knots
down into the tp holder a little. This will stable the tp holder
a little bit so the weight is even, and it will stand up. Smooth the mane down so that it
covers up the yarn that comes through the holder, and flows in the back
of the tp holder and on both sides of your lions head. Your now done.
There is also another
interesting Project that the children can do using the above project
and another project. Below is a website for a Puppy Yarn Bug. You can use the Lion Pattern
above, and then make a Lion Yarn Bug. Yarn Bug.
Lion's Face (activity we'll be doing at
Sukkot)
Materials
Needed:
1.) 1/2 yard of any material,
with any design on it (doubled for lions face)
2.) 8" of material (doubled for ears, times 2)
3.) Sewing machine
4.) googley eyes
5.) yarn or embrodery thread or cloth markers
6.) lace bias tape (for mane)
7.) Stuffing
8.) lining (8", double, times 2)
9.) Glue
10.) black felt
Getting Ready:
I've pre-sewed and pre-stuffed the lions head. (I can't bring my
sewing machine to the feast).
You can use any good sized circular object. I used the round
plastic lid off an ice cream bucket. This will be the head.
Cut 2.
Take a different piece of material that you chose for the ears, and cut
out 4 ears,
and then cut 2 ears
using the lining.
First take the ears and turn the material with right sides
together. Place a one piece of lining in the middle and sew
around each ear, leaving the bottom open. Turn ear right side out.
Turn one of the circles (wrong side up). Next place the ears on
the circle so that the ear is inside the cirlce, and the open end of
the ear is on the sewing line. Pin the ears to the circle.
Next take the lace biased tape and starting at the bottom of the lion, pin the
lace around the circle back to the bottom. Leave about an inch on
either side of the lace unpinned at the bottom, Sew the two ends of the
lace together, and finish pinning to the circle.
Sew ears and lace to the lion' head (circle).
Next, take the other circle (front of lion's face) and face the front
side of the material down.
Now you can sew the front side of the lion's head, starting about a
1/2" from where the lace is sewn together. Stop about a 1/2"
before the place where the lace is sewn together. (This will
leave you a hole to turn the lion right side out and to stuff).
Turn right side out.
Stuff the lion's head stuffing it a little tight.
Whip stitch the hole closed.
Children's Part:
For those children at home (depending on age) they can help put the
lion's head together above. Since I can't take the sewing
machine, and for time purposes, I did all the above ahead of time.
The children at the feast will now give their lion's a face.
1.) Using the stick glue or any tacky glue, glue the eyes on.
2.) Cut out a nose using the black felt.
3.) Using the yarn or embrodery thread
or cloth markers, make your mouth.
4.) draw on some whiskers.
