Cubit:

Cubit is the name for any one of many units of measure used by various ancient peoples, based on the distance between the tip of the middle finger and the elbow on an average person or a similar forearm-based measurement.

From around 1950 BC, the copper bar cubit of Nippur defines the Sumerian cubit as 517.2 mm (20.36 inches) and is the earliest known length standard.

The (ama) used for Jewish religious purposes today is considered to be some 46–61 cm (18–24 in).

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia -

For our purposes today, we’ll average out the one used by Jews today, which would mean the cubit = 21 inches. Below are six different things that YHWH told the Israelites to build. Figure that a cubit is 21 inches long, and see if you can figure out how what the length, width, and height of each piece was in inches, and or feet. This will give you an idea of how big or small everything was.

Example: One cubit = 21 inches. A table measures 3 cubits long, 2 cubits wide, and 2 ˝ cubits heigh.

First, take the length, 3 cubits. Multiply that by 21 inches. 3 x 21 = 63 inches.

Second, take the width, 2 cubits. Multiply that by 21 inches. 2 x 21 = 42 inches.

Third, take the height, 2 ˝ cubits. Multiply that by 21 inches. (2 ˝ is the same as 2.5). 2.5 x 21= 52.5, so 52 ˝ inches tall.

You can now take your answers, Length = 63 inches; Width = 42 inches; and the height 52 ˝ inches and leave them like this if you want, or you can figure out how many feet of each you have. To figure the feet, you know there is 12 inches in a foot. You divide 12 inches by 63, 12 divided by 42, and 12 divided by 52 ˝.

Answer the below activities. Give your answer in inches, and also give your answers in feet.

1.) Ex. 25:10 They shall make an ark of acacia wood; it shall be two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide, and a cubit and a half high. _____________________________________________

2.) Ex. 25:17 Then you shall make a mercy seat of pure gold; two cubits and a half shall be its length, and a cubit and a half its width. _____________________________________________

3.) Ex. 25:23 You shall make a table of acacia wood, two cubits long, one cubit wide, and a cubit and a half high. _____________________________________________

4.) Ex. 26:13 The cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, of what remains in the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle, on this side and that side, to cover it. _____________________________________________

5.) Ex. 26:15 You shall make upright frames of acacia wood for the tabernacle. 16 Ten cubits shall be the length of a frame, and a cubit and a half the width of each frame. _____________________________________________

6.) Ex. 30:1 You shall make an altar on which to offer incense; you shall make it of acacia wood. 2 It shall be one cubit long, and one cubit wide; it shall be square, and shall be two cubits high; its horns shall be of one piece with it. _____________________________________________

Okay, Now that you have seen about how big the different things that were made were, and have figured out how to go from cubits to inches, and then to feet, now lets see if you can go from inches to cubits, and from feet to cubits. This is a neat activity, because you will be able to find out how many cubits things are around your house.

1.) How many cubits is the computer monitor?__________________________

2.) How many cubits is your TNK?__________________________

3.) What is the cubits of a table in your house? Give the length, width, and height.__________________________

4.) How many cubits is your bed? Give length, width, and height.__________________________

5.) How many cubits are you?__________________________
